Adults who say they want to die either actually want to die or they are lying.
If someone says they are hungry, do you tell them that they actually don't feel hungry?
If suicide is respected as a civil and human right for adults when it is done in private, then adults can finally have open and honest conversations about suicide. We will have more opportunities to use persuasion, reason, and kindness to reduce suicides to zero, a worthwhile goal indeed.
I'm all for helping adults who want help. Psychiatric confinement involves locked doors. Some individuals stay in psychiatric units voluntarily. Many don't.
Only consensual psychiatry should be legal.
